This parashah starts out with Ya’akov having a dream of a ladder with the angels of God traveling up and down. He then talked with God standing next to him who told him the land would belong to his descendants. He then travels to the land of Lavan, grandson of Nachor. Here he sees Rachel who he falls in love with. He becomes a servant to for Lavan for seven years to get her as his wife. After seven years, Lavan gives him the older daughter, Leah to be his wife instead. He has to work an additional seven year to get Rachel. God opens Leah’s womb but closes Rachel’s because leah was not loved as Rachel was. Ya’akov ends up sleeping with the hand maidens of each of his wives, and has 12 sons and 1 daughter by them. These 12 sons will later be the leaders of the 12 tribes of Isra’el. As Ya’akov leaves to go home, he has a trick of his own for Lavan to get his livestock, increasing his own wealth. This caused animosity between Lavan and Ya’akov. Ya’akov took everything of Lavan, and Rachel even took the household gods. When Lavan caught up with Ya’akov he could not find to idols because Rachel was sitting on them. Ya’akov formed covenant with Lavan and they left in peace.
