Torah Portion:
B'resheet/Genesis 37:1-40:23
Haftarah (Prophets):
'Amos/Amos 2:6-3:8
B'rit Hadashah:
Acts 7:9-16
Here we begin the story of Yosef, who is the favored son of Ya’akov. He shows his favor with a special coat. Between this and dreams he has which sets him above his family, he gains contempt from his brothers. At first, they want to kill him, but instead sell him into slavery into Egypt. He becomes head servant in the house of Potifar, a captain of the guard. This story is broken with a story of Y’hudah, who sleeps with his daughter-in-law, thinking she is a prostitute. His sin is later found out when she produces his staff and signet ring he left with her. We then return to the story of Yosef, for a contrasting story of Potifar’s wife asking Yosef to sleep with her but he refuses and runs out, leaving his robe behind. She accuses him of raping her, which has him thrown in prison. It is here that he is able to interpret the dreams of Pharaoh’s cupbearer and baker. Both interpretations come to pass and the parashah finishes.
