As Avraham is still recovering from his circumcision, three “men” come to visit him. One of them engages him in discussion, telling him as well as Sarah of their coming son. This “angel” is more than an average angel, as he suddenly is also God. This appears to be the Messiah Himself. Avraham then engages God in a negotiation to spare S’dom on account of the few righteous that live there. The other two angels spend the night at the house of Lot and his family. Men of the city come wanting to have sex with them, thus showing the level of depravity this city had fallen. Lot, the angels, his wife, and his daughters flee S’dom the next morning before God destroys the city with fire and brimstone. Lot’s wife disobeys God and is turned into a pillar of salt. Lot and his daughters escape to the mountains, where they decide to each have sex with him in order to give him descendants. This is where the Moabites and the Ammonites are born. Avraham passes his wife off as his sister to Avimelekh, who tries to take her as his wife, only to find out Avraham had lied to him. Avraham had to pray on Avimelekh’s behalf to release him from the sin. After this, Yitz’chak is born. Contention arises between Sarah and Yishma’el, the son of Hagar. A nation is promised to Yishma’el and Hagar is comforted. Avraham makes an alliance with Avimelekh. The parashah ends with the story of Avraham and the sacrifice of Yitz’chak. God recognizes his total faith in Him and provides a ram, preventing Avraham from carrying out the sacrifice.
