Summary of Lekh L'kha:

We start out this parashah with God telling Avram to get out of the land of Ur where he was living and travel to a land He will later show him. Avram ended up going to Egypt where he lied about Sarai being his wife and tolf them she was his sister. This caused problems when Pharaoh took her as his wife. She was returned when the truth was told. He left there with his family and that of Lot and settled in the land of Beit-El in Kena'an. This is where God initially promises to make his descendents prosperous and give them the land. Chapter 14 includes a war between several kings, as well as Abram and his army of 318 men. They are victorious and meet the king of Shalem, Malki-Tzedek, a type of Messiah and possibly the Messiah Himself. Abram is blessed and Abram gives a tenth of everything to Malki-Tzedek. God again promises Abram numerous descendants and this time promises a son with whom the promise will be fulfilled. Abram believes the promise and it is credited to him as righteousness. Sarai gives Avram her handmaiden, Hagar to sleep with and Yishma'el is born. The Abrahamic Covenant is stated again in detail in chapter 17 and God tells his Yishma'el is not the promised son and Sarai will bear him a son, Yitz'chak. The parashah ends with the newly named Avraham and every male in his household being circumcised.
